A proposal by Mayor Zohran Mamdani and the NYC Department of Transportation has been unveiled to ban cars from Grand Army Plaza, which is currently a chaotic traffic circle. The plan aims to reorientate the southern edge of the plaza into pedestrian and cyclist space and connect the Soldiers’ and Sailors’ Memorial Arch directly to Prospect Park. The redesign would reduce pedestrian-vehicle conflict points and add new public space, wider walking paths, and upgraded bike lanes. However, there are concerns that the changes could cause traffic to move onto nearby residential streets or slow emergency vehicles.
