The U.S. and Israeli war against Iran is accelerating the transition from fossil fuels to electricity, with Asia most exposed to the loss of crude oil and liquefied natural gas from the Strait of Hormuz. The loss of around 10 million barrels per day (bpd) of crude and refined product supply from the Middle East and about 20% of global LNG is a game-changer for Asia, with increasing penetration of electric vehicles (EVs) and battery electric storage systems (BESS) across Southeast Asia and South Asia now seen as guaranteed. The rapid deployment of these systems will destroy demand destruction for refined products such as gasoline and diesel and increase the use of LNG for gas-fired power generation. However, the impact of the conflict on EV sales and BESS systems is expected to increase, particularly in countries with market pricing for gasoline diesel.
