KC unveils predesigned homes as Overland Park residents push back

Kansas City Mayor Quinton Lucas has unveiled seven pre-approved home plans that allow builders to skip architect fees and design delays while expediting the permit process. The plans, which follow a similar program launched by Overland Park, aim to make housing easier to build and more affordable as Americans spend more on where they live. However, residents in Overland have raised concerns about the implementation of a pilot zoning rule for Portfolio Homes, which aims to streamline the process and keep project approvals largely in the hands of the planning commission and out of council. The Home Builders Association of Greater Kansas City supports the program, stating that it should fit within current zoning districts and does not require rezoning.
