In peace talks between Ukraine and Russia, Ukraine has proposed renaming a contested 50-mile-long, 40-mile wide sliver of Ukraine's industrial heartland as "Donnyland." This idea is part of an effort to pressure the Trump Administration to take a harder line against Russia's territorial demands. The Donbas region, which is internationally recognized as part of Ukraine but has been occupied by Russia since 2014, has been a key point of contention in negotiations. Ukraine's President Volodymyr Zelensky suggested that parts of the Donbas could become demilitarized or free economic zones, but issues remain over how much administrative power and policing either country would have in the areas. This proposal has not been widely supported by both sides.
