‘Childhood crisis’: Oregon lawmakers consider AI safeguards for youth mental health

Oregon lawmakers are considering a bill that would place safeguards on artificial intelligence chatbots to protect youth mental health. The bill would place regulations on AI chatbot platforms, such as ChatGPT, Grok or Claude, where chatbots mimic personal conversations. It would require these platforms to refer users to mental health resources if they express ideas of self-harm or suicide, and would also require chatbot companies to disclose to users that they are seeing AI-generated information. This comes after parents reported losing their teenage children to the technology. The lone “no” vote was from Senator Noah Robinson (R-Cave Junction), who agreed with the idea behind SB 1546. However, he also questioned regulation of the evolving AI industry.
