N.J. driver’s licenses would not be usable for voter registration under the SAVE America Act
Published on April 11, 2026.
The proposed SAVE America Act, which requires some driver's licenses to be used for voter registration in limited states if it passes, has been met with misleading claims about its impact on voter registration. The bill requires individuals to provide "documentary proof of United States citizenship" when registering to vote, which can include REAL ID-compliant identification, a valid U.S. passport, military IDs, and other government-issued photo IDs that do not state place of birth or otherwise confirm citizenship. However, those without these licenses or live in states or territories that don't issue them would need additional documentation. Critics argue that the bill's citizenship requirements would create an undue burden for many voters due to obstacles such as passport costs and processing times. The legislation has passed the House and is now in the Senate.
