The American Kennel Club (AKC) has revealed its list of the rarest dog breeds in the US, including the Norwegian Lundehund, the only dog in the world to hunt puffins. The AKC analyzed registration statistics to determine the most prevalent and uncommon canines in the United States. The ranking shifts from year to year as new breeds are added. The Lundehand traces its origins to the remote island of Vaeroy in Norway’s Lofoten archipelago, where it was recognized by the AKC in 2021. In 2025, it will be estimated that there will be 202 total breeds recognized. The most popular dog breed in America is the Labrador Retriever.
