Southland school administrators have expressed concern over safety following student walkouts at their three high schools in protest against the Trump administration's mass deportation campaign. District 218 Superintendent Josh Barron stated that students who missed classes due to their participation in the walkout received unexcused absences for those classes, which could result in disciplinary action such as detention, loss of credit for assignments missed while absent, and class or classes being dropped. Similar walkouts took place at other south and southwest suburban districts including Homewood-Flossmoor High School. The district's code of conduct does not specify how many students were disciplined for participating in these walkouts.
