The media layoffs across the entertainment industry, including Paramount, Warner Bros Discovery, and CNN, are causing a significant increase in job losses due to several factors including the Covid-19 pandemic, dual Hollywood strikes, and a series of wildfires in Los Angeles. The potential merger of Warner Bros. Discovery and Netflix is also on the rise, with Epic Games informing employees that its laying off of 1,000 workers was unrelated to AI. Meanwhile, Starz had a round of layoffs that affected 7% of its employees. Lionsgate let fewer than 10 employees go in early March as part of restructuring and reorganizing. Universal Music Group’s TV and movie studio, Mercury Studios, was also hit by layoffs. The Washington Post began making cuts to a third of its staff in early February, with the sports section being removed and book coverage not continuing. The former CEO of Twitter, Jack Dorsey, described his company Blocks as “one of the hardest decisions” in history, resulting in a reduction of staff by nearly half, with 4,000 employees.
