Former plant worker Toru Akama, who lives near the Fukushima nuclear disaster site, has devoted his life to caring for abandoned pets after the disaster, which occurred 15 years ago. He began caring for the animals abandoned when their owners fled the triple disaster of March 11, 2011: earthquake, tsunami, and nuclear accident. Akama found adoptive families for over 1,000 animals and continues to take in new pets who have been abandoned for other reasons. He has spent almost all of the compensation he received after the accident on the animals, covering most of their care and food costs. Despite the stress and uncertainty, Akama remains committed to helping these animals and remains active throughout his life.
