Democratic Rep. Eric Swalwell has withdrawn his bid for governor of California after a former aide accused him of sexually assaulting her. The allegations were published in a San Francisco Chronicle article, which corroborated the former staffer's story by reviewing text messages sent to a friend three days after one alleged assault. Despite calls from fellow Democrats including Reps. Jimmy Gomez and Adam Gray of California, the co-chairs of his campaign, and Sen. Ruben Gallego, D-Ariz., retracting his endorsement of Swalworth. The primary election for governor in California is scheduled for June 2 and early voting begins May 4.
