More Virginians claim Irish roots this St. Patrick's Day

The number of Virginians with Irish ancestry is increasing ahead of St. Patrick's Day, with nearly 9.1% of the state's population reported having Irish ancestry in 2024, up from the 8.7% reported in 2022. This puts Virginia close to the national average of 9.4%. Rappahannock County has the highest percentage of Irish residents in the state at 17.10%. Meanwhile, Hanover has the most residents of Irish descent in metro Richmond at 10.25%.
