The future of the Middle Mill weir in Colchester, which controls water flow and depth, is uncertain as it has not been replaced by a new weir. The council's cabinet is set to vote on a proposal to build another weir further upstream, potentially costing the council £2.2m. If the council does not rebuild the weir, the river at Castle Park would still require maintenance at a cost of £5,000 per year. The cost of the reconstruction could exceed £900,000.
