State officials have approved the largest battery storage facility in Massachusetts and New England, set to be built on a former Exxon Mobil oil tank farm in Everett. The project will include 700 megawatts of power capacity and 2.8 gigawatt-hours of stored energy, and will occupy about 16.5 acres of the 20.75-acre site. Jupiter Power was granted zoning exemptions by the state's Energy Facilities Siting Board and the City of Everett Zoning Ordinance also granted the company zoning exemptions. Supporters of the project argue it will improve the electric system's reliability and affordability for ratepayers and help the state’s clean energy transition. An engineering analysis found that the battery project could help prevent grid upgrades that could amount to $2.27 billion in transmission upgrade costs through 2050. The proposed Everett project is part of a larger proposal dubbed the "Everett Docklands Innovation District," which aims to turn the oil terminal into industrial, high-tech manufacturing, lab/office, retail, and residential space alongside the proposed Trimount Energy Storage Facility.
