Oak University (Oakland University) hosted a town hall meeting to address questions about a proposed AI data center, which could provide students with research opportunities, hands-on learning experiences, and training on emerging technologies. The center would not be built or funded by the university, but will be entered into a public-private partnership (P3) with Fairmount Practices, a company with experience in higher education and technology, which would finance and construct the facility. University leaders are seeking faculty feedback on potential partnerships. Some attendees raised concerns about sustainability and environmental impact of data centers, but the university is committed to avoiding any reduction of green space. If the project does not proceed, OU would likely need to take on debt to upgrade its infrastructure.
