San Diego reexamines Cesar Chavez legacy after bombshell sexual abuse claims

There is growing local reaction in San Diego County following allegations of sexual abuse against labor leader Cesar Chavez, who was instrumental in organizing farmworkers and fighting for Latino civil rights. The New York Times report accuses Chavez of abusing girls for years and raping United Farm Workers co-founder Dolores Huerta in the 60s and 70s, which resulted in two pregnancies. District 1 County Supervisor Paloma Aguirre has called for the federal government to remove the federal day named after Chavez and change it to honor DoloresHuerta. The San Diego Community College District is reviewing its participation in Cesar Chávez activities and reviewing its connection to the late Chavez, including the naming of the Barrio Logan campus. The family of Chavez expressed their devastation in a statement following the New YorkTimes article.
