Jun Saito, a 43-year-old man from Saitama, has been sentenced to life in prison for murdering three members of a family in 2002. The victims were American William Bishop, his wife Izumi Morita, and their daughter Sophiana Megumi Morata. Saito was also found with a black and silver axe and a crowbar at his home. The court ruled that Saito's diminished mental state at the time of the crime was behind the murder. The prosecution had sought the death penalty, but the lay judge jury decided against this, arguing Saito understood the illegality of his crime and was aware of its illegality. The DNA profiles of blood samples taken inside the house matched those of the three victims and Saito.
