How the Avalanche's 'Lumber Yard' goalie tandem was built

The Colorado Avalanche traded for Mackenzie Blackwood and Scott Wedgewood within days of each other during the 2024-25 season. The two goalies began their hockey journeys in the New Jersey Devils' farm system, where they were drafted with the promise of becoming an NHL goaltender. However, their success led them to separate ways and they found success on their subsequent journeys. The lessons they learned playing for the Avalanche have helped build one of the NHL's best goalkeeping tandems. Blackwood credits Wedgewwood for creating an authentic relationship, which he says flourishes into what it is now.
