The U.S. Department of Education has launched two new investigations into Harvard University, citing allegations of ongoing discrimination on campus. The investigations were opened by the department's Office for Civil Rights, which will investigate whether the university continues to use race-based preferences in admissions despite a Supreme Court decision lost in 2023. One of the probes will also investigate allegations of continuous antisemitic harassment on the campus. If found, the department will hold Harvard accountable for any illegal policies or actions. The department has also issued a Letter of Impending Enforcement Action for Harvard's refusal to provide requested information regarding its admissions process, giving the university 20 days to comply or face possible actions, including referral to the Department of Justice. The DOJ sued Harvard in February alleging the school unlawfully withheld race-related admissions data and has sued the university again for failing to address antisemitism on campus, leading to the government to freeze existing grants and seek repayment for grants already paid.
