The AI missing dog scam, which could involve several states, has been reported to be targeting families of missing dogs in Deltona, Florida, and Texas, with investigators suspecting it may be connected to a similar case in Texas. The scam allegedly involved sending AI-generated images of their missing dog, Archer, on an operating table, and demanding money for surgery. The victim's family and relatives had posted about their missing dogs online, with photos and a phone number used to contact the scam. The fraudulent caller claimed their dogs had been hit by a car and demanded more than $2,000 in both cases. Volusia County Sheriff Mike Chitwood believes these cases may be linked to an overseas operation. The FBI's 2025 Internet Crime Report indicates that the scam may be operating from an overseas server.
