The Boston Archdiocese has declined to grant special dispensation for Catholics to eat meat during the Red Sox home opener on Good Friday, one of the holiest days of the Christian calendar. The church's ban on eating meat during Lent is usually followed by Catholic prayer, fasting, prayer, and penance. This year, the Feast of St. Patrick, the patron saint of the Arch Diocese, fell on a Friday during Lent and Cardinal Sean O'Malley granted the same one-day dispensation. The Red Sox team is set to play against the San Diego Padres at 2 p.m.
