Anthropic, an AI lab that refuses to allow military uses of its AI systems, has been supported by supporters in its fight against the U.S. Department of Defense (D-MA) who designated it as a supply-chain risk after it refused to make concessions on how its AI could be used by the military. U.K. Senator Elizabeth Warren (D) has labelled the Pentagon's decision to bar Anthropic as retaliation, arguing that the Pentagon could have terminated its contract with the AI lab. Tech companies and employees from OpenAI, Google, and Microsoft have also supported Anthropic in their support. The dispute arose after Anthropic expressed concern over the potential use of its systems for mass surveillance and lethal weapons without human intervention. The Defense Department maintains that the designation was a national security call and not punishment for Anthropic's views.
