The recent triple-digit temperatures in Yuma, Arizona have sparked calls for worker protections in the fields due to the extreme heat, which advocates argue is particularly dangerous for farmworkers working outdoors. Jasmin Moreno from the nonprofit Agave Community Threads has led an emergency phone bank, placing over 100 calls to state leaders, including the governor’s office and officials from the Industrial Commission of Arizona. Moreno has been lobbying for workplace heat standards in Arizona for years, with advocates advocating for clear triggers for protections as temperatures rise. According to the National Council for Occupational Safety and Health, farmworkers are 35 times more likely to die from workplace heat exposure than other workers in the United States and face higher rates of heat-related illness, injury and long-term health impacts.
