The Minnesota Legislature is considering expanding coverage requirements for state-regulated health plans through the “Minnesota Building Families Act” (HF 1758/SF 1961). The bill, which has bipartisan support, aims to help thousands of Minnesotans who struggle to have children. The National Institutes of Health estimates that between 12% and 15% of American couples experience infertility, and that their health insurance does not cover most of their fertility care costs. The bill would help these couples who enter a critical age for having children. Twenty-five states already have fertility insurance laws, providing various levels of coverage for this treatment. However, Minnesota would be the first regionally to do so.
