A Los Angeles jury has awarded a 20-year-old woman $6 million in a landmark case against social media companies and Google, alleging that platform design features such as infinite scroll and autoplay caused a childhood addiction that led to anxiety, body dysmorphia, and suicidal thoughts. The plaintiff, identified as K.G.M, alleged that excessive use of Instagram and YouTube as a child intensified her mental health issues. The jury deliberated for nine days before awarding KGM $3 million in compensatory damages and an additional $3M in punitive damages. This victory is the first such personal injury case to reach trial and could impact legislation and change the way kids use social media platforms. The lead lawyer on the case, Emily Jeffcot, also mentioned that the next case will focus on addiction and the potential harm caused by lack of sleep for minors who use their phones all hours of the night.
