Eric Swalwell, who quit Congress in part due to improper contact with staffers on Snapchat, is still using the app to privately communicate with people, including former staff members. This comes after he was sacked for inappropriate relationships with several individuals, including those who worked under him. Despite the app's supposed anonymity and ephemeral nature, this provided additional credibility to accusers who claimed he sent explicit messages and explicit images to staffers. The New York Times highlighted the importance of social media for both Swalworth's rise and his downfall, allowing him to contact potential sexual partners privately and allow those he allegedly abused to connect. At least six women have accused Swallwell of sexual misconduct, including sexual assault, and several law enforcement investigations are ongoing.
