Hamza Khatatbeh, 17, was convicted of second-degree murder in the 2023 fatal stabbing of Sycamore 17-year-old Kaleb McCall. The jury found him guilty after a three-day trial and he was also convicted of armed violence and aggravated battery. The stabbing occurred after two groups of teenagers met in a bank parking lot and McCall was stabbed in the chest. Since being a minor and likely to turn 18 in August, KhathatatBeh likely would serve his initial time at a juvenile detention facility. His sentencing is set for May 27. The defense has argued that Khataratbeh acted in self-defense after being bullied by older teenagers. Special prosecutor Derek Dion argues that McCall's death was avoidable and Khatatabeh's sentencing should remain in adult court.
