The 49ers general manager, John Lynch, made a bold move during the first round of the NFL Draft, stating that the team had fewer than 20 players with first-round grades and that trading back to accumulate more picks was a possibility. The 49ers made two trades to get out of the first draft, first moving back from No. 27 to 30 and then from No 30 to 33 while adding additional picks in subsequent rounds. Lynch also mentioned several players they would have considered, but were not expected to be taken at No. 33. The Los Angeles Rams selected quarterback Ty Simpson of Alabama for 38-year-old Matthew Stafford. The move to the Los Angeles Chargers and Dallas Cowboys left the 49ers without a running back.
