Atlantic Health has expanded its cardio-oncology program to focus on patients at risk of developing heart disease before, during, or after cancer treatment. These complications can interrupt critical cancer treatment and may have long-term impacts on survival and quality of life. The program is a collaboration between Atlantic Health oncology, cardiology and primary care teams and includes identification of pre-existing heart conditions before and during treatment. The potential complications may not be detected until after cancer is deemed 'cancer-free'. Some patients at greater risk include patients 65 years and older when starting cancer treatment, or those treated decades ago for Hodgkin's disease.
