The US Navy has sunk an Iranian frigate, the Dena, off the coast of Sri Lanka during Iran strikes on March 4. This marks the first time an American submarine has torpedoed an enemy vessel since World War II. The incident occurred during the undeclared war against Iran. Submariners expressed pride in their capabilities and regret over the loss of life. The Department of Defense released footage and periscope views that appear to show the vessel lifted out of the water by the blast, then sinking almost vertically. At least 87 members of Dena’s 180-man crew were killed and at least 32 were rescued by the Sri Lankan navy. The attack has sparked debate in Australia about whether the three Australian sailors were involved in the conflict.
