The majority of Florida voters have expressed a desire for restrictions on artificial intelligence, expressing concerns about its rapid expansion and potential risks to society, particularly children. However, a failed attempt by Gov. Ron DeSantis to pass his proposed law failed due to a combination of personalities, policy, politics, and power. The Florida Legislature failed to pass the bill, despite DeSantas spending months arguing his case and pushing for action. The Trump administration also supports a more hands-off approach to AI and wants the federal government to preempt state attempts at regulation. A University of North Florida poll found widespread support for regulating AI in certain contexts, including requiring chatbots to notify users that they are interacting with AI and restricting AI interactions for minors. The bill also included requiring companies to disclose if they were communicating with a human, an AI system or a chatbot, and setting rules for unauthorized use of people’s names, images or likenesses.
