Yale University President Maurie McInnis led a committee of faculty members to investigate why the public is losing trust in higher education institutions like Yale. The committee found that the erosion of trust is due to self-censorship and political bias. The report also identified several reasons for Yale's loss of public favor, including grade inflation, bureaucratic bloat, rising tuition costs, and controversial admissions practices. It highlighted Yale's commitment to free speech and open debate, particularly in light of the recent Halloween incident where school administrators told students not to wear culturally insensitive Halloween costumes. Nearly a third of undergraduate respondents said they did not feel free to express their political beliefs on campus, an increase from 17 percent in 2015. The Committee also highlighted concerns about ideological conformity on campus and suggested that more stringent university policies could only go so far.
