David Barrett, a 31-year-old musician from Michigan, has written the song 'One Shining Moment' which is the highlight of March Madness. The song was originally inspired by a conversation with a bar waitress in 1986, when he was watching Larry Bird's Boston Celtics run over another opponent. Barrett then expanded the words into a chorus on napkins at a brunch spot, The Knight Cap Too, and the tune was used for advertising purposes. For nearly 40 years, the song and lyrics have been part of the soundtrack of college basketball's championship celebrations. It was discovered by sports reporter Armen Keteyian, who had moved to New York to write for Sports Illustrated. Following a prank call from a friend, he recorded the song for a local advertising station and it was discovered 15 minutes later.
