The 2026 Milwaukee Film Festival saw a significant increase in attendance, with 36,922 attendees across its 15-day run, marking a 15.4% growth over 2025. The festival presented 243 films and hosted 281 public screenings at venues such as the Oriental Theatre and Downer Theatre. The event was particularly significant as Milwaukee Film had purchased the Downer Theater earlier this year, giving them long-term control of the 111-year-old East Side cinema. Despite this growth, attendance remains below the pre-COVID peak of 87,618 in 2019. The organization's ReEL Impact Drive raised $163,605 to support operations through donations and a silent auction. The 2026 Abele Catalyst Award was given to Matthew G. Helmerich, whose trust helped support Milwaukee Film's acquisition of the Downor Theatre.
