Krista Powers, a cancer survivor, used restorative 3-D tattooing to make her feel more like herself after breast reconstruction surgery following a lump in her breast and subsequent diagnosis of cancer in 2023. The tattooing was done by Shannon Housley of the Hously Institute, an aesthetic services clinic in Cincinnati, Ohio. The technique uses shading and color blending to create a realistic-looking nipple and areola. After completing treatment, Powers underwent a 13-hour DIEP flap breast reconstruction and released a book about her journey. She credits her transformation to giving herself permission to explore the spectrum of grief and to listen to each other rather than fix it.
