The North Carolina Department of Health and Human Services (NCDHHS) has issued a warning about an increase in Legionnaires' disease cases, which is a severe form of pneumonia caused by the bacterium known as Legionella. Most people who catch the disease breathe in the bacteria from water or soil, which can also live in wet environments such as air conditioners. The disease can be prevented by monitoring and cleaning water systems.
