Alaska’s first Golden Gloves Championships in decades draw skilled boxers, big crowd

The Alaska Golden Gloves Championships were held last month, marking the first in the state in over 35 years. The event was attended by nearly three dozen boxers, including Masters boxers David Booker and Chad Erickson. The return of a sanctioned Golden Gloves competition was seen as a significant milestone for the state's growing boxing scene. The organizers believe this experience will help secure more sponsors and support for future events. Special guests of honor included Boxing Hall of Fame referee Joe Cortez and former WBC IBF world champion Shawn "Showtime" Porter. Other parts of Alaska represented included Fairbanks and Wasilla, and boxers from California, Oregon and Washington.
