The EU has rejected Canada's membership in the European Union, stating that Canada is not a European state enough to join. Enlargement Commissioner MARTA KOS stated that there are two preconditions to join the EU: "You are a state. However, you are not an EU state.” A senior Canadian government official said they envisage a level of integration between non-members Norway and Switzerland, not full bloc membership. Germany's Ambassador in Ottawa suggested that while current EU treaties limit membership to European countries, there are other ways for deeper, closer integration. The Liberal government is facing opposition to its plan to expand its control control over key House committee tables from 10 to seven, with the Liberals accusing the Conservatives of undemocratic and attempting to block the move.
