Today in Chicago History: Loyola Ramblers win NCAA basketball championship

In 1963, Loyola Ramblers won the NCAA basketball championship over Cincinnati, marking the first time a championship game featured a majority of Black starters in the sport. The victory was achieved through a last-second put-back of a Les Hunter miss. President John F. Kennedy visited Chicago to dedicate O’Hare International Airport to the city and campaign for Mayor Richard J. Daley's election for a third term. In 2017, a new indictment was added in the murder case against Chicago police Officer Jason Van Dyke, adding 16 counts of aggravated battery to the original charges.
