President Donald Trump has signed an executive order aimed at accelerating research and removing barriers to psychedelic drugs as potential treatments for veterans' mental illnesses. The initiative includes creating a pathway for eligible patients to access investigational psychedelic drugs such as ibogaine compounds, psilocybin, and LSD. The Department of Health and Human Services and the FDA will also work with the Department of Veterans Affairs and the private sector to increase clinical trial participation, data sharing, and real-world evidence generation regarding psychedelic drugs. The White House noted that over 14 million American adults suffer from a serious mental illness and high suicide rates among veterans, which are more than double the non-veteran adult population.
