Spain has stated that it will not allow the United States to use its air bases for operations related to Iran strikes, citing this as a violation of international law. The Spanish Foreign Minister, José Manuel Albares, stated that the joint-use bases, which are under Spanish sovereignty, would not be used for anything not included within the treaty nor outside the U.N. Charter that only permits the use of force against another nation if it has been authorized by the Security Council or in self-defense. The attacks on Iran resulted in the death of Supreme Leader Ayatollah Ali Khamenei. Iranian Foreign Minister Abbas Araghchi accused the US of committing "war crimes" highlighting strikes on schools, residential buildings and emergency facilities.
