Genté reader, whose wife and son, thought he was being petty for asking a kid not to eat in my car while driving his son's neighborhood friend to school on his way to work, while his friend, who is polite and respectful in all manner, eats his breakfast in the backseat of the car. The smell of his bagel often lingers in the car, often leading to the car being transported 25 minutes away from school. The friend had never asked permission to have his daily breakfast during the ride. So, when the school year was nearly over, I decided to address the issue, using a white lie about having to pick up customers the next day after school dropoff and suggesting that he could "grab" his breakfast before the school day. Despite this, Miss Manners suggests that good manners need not mean being bulldozed by others.
