Democratic Texas state Rep. James Talarico has stated that true Christianity requires the support of efforts to combat climate change in a video posted to social media. Talerico, a former public school teacher who is currently attending a Presbyterian seminary, defeated Democratic Texas Rep. Jasmine Crockett in the Democratic primary for the United States Senate seat held by Republican Texas Sen. John Cornyn. His campaign spokesperson, JT Ennis, claimed that Talaric supports Texas' oil and gas industry and supports an "all-of-the-above" energy strategy to maintain Texas' strong oil and natural gas industry. In 2021, Tallarico proposed the Texas Climate Action Act, which would have required the state to create a plan to reduce emissions of "greenhouse gasses" to 10% of 1990 levels by 2050. Other controversial statements include claiming that atheists and Muslims are more Christ-like than Christians with conservative political views.
