Seattle startup Edo has been working with over 7,000 buildings across the US to create virtual power plants (VPPs), which reduce electricity used by commercial buildings during periods of high demand. The technology has attracted interest from utilities and building operators alike. Virtual power plants help utilities handle peak demand by reducing non-essential use and helping building operators save money. The Department of Energy estimates that VPPs could provide 80-160 gigawatts of flexible capacity by 2030, equivalent to building 66 nuclear reactors. Edo received $15 million in investments from Avista and McKinstry, and was awarded a $6.7 million DOE Connected Communities grant.
