Gov. JB Pritzker and Sen. Dick Durbin are urging President Donald Trump to contribute to a massive project to prevent invasive Asian carp from entering the Great Lakes, a project the Trump administration halted in December. This comes after he praised the project, which was met with Michigan Gov. Gretchen Whitmer and mentioned the governors of Illinois, Wisconsin, Minnesota, Pennsylvania, Ohio and New York. This announcement was surprising as the Trump Administration had previously paused the Brandon Road Interbasin Project, which is seen as a vital way to prevent the invasive species from entering Great Lakes. The $1.15 billion project is in the Des Plaines River near Joliet and is expected to be completed within five years. Without a barrier, the Asian carp could threaten the $20 billion fishing and boating industries and upend the freshwater ecosystem.
