San Diego to begin delivering new recycling bins Wednesday through early fall
Published on March 25, 2026.
San Diego will begin delivering light blue recycling bins to households that receive city trash and recycling service. The new bins are described as more durable, easy to identify, better labeled, and equipped with scannable tags to improve reliability and accountability. Most customers will receive their new bins on their regular trash day, with crews removing the old recycling bins the same day. However, with over 225,000 households eligible, this process will take several months. Since October, 96% of eligible households have received the new gray trash bins, with Rehrig Pacific continuing recycling old bins into plastic regrind for other uses. The change comes after voters approved Measure B in 2022, allowing the city to charge a monthly fee for solid trash pickup for single-family homes and multi-family complexes with up to four residences on a single lot.
