House Republicans rejected a Senate-passed package that would fund a majority of the Department of Homeland Security (DHS) but instead proposed a short-term measure that would instead fund the entire department for eight weeks. The rejection of the Senate deal extends the longest partial government shutdown in U.S. history, which has left DHS unfunded for nearly six weeks and has resulted in long security lines at airports. The Senate had passed a package to fund most of DHS, excluding ICE and CBP, over Democrats' demands for stricter requirements for agents involved in President Donald Trump's immigration crackdown. The eight-week DHS stopgap measure is unlikely to pass in the Senate as it requires Democratic support. Many House Republicans have criticized the Senate's funding package as a capitulation and accused Senate Republicans of giving too much to Democrats.
