Donald E. Smith, a 75-year-old defense contractor from Robinson Township, Pennsylvania, was found guilty of defrauding the Pentagon on eight counts of wire fraud and five counts of willful failure to file a tax return. Prosecutors allege that Smith sold the Pentagon non-conforming parts for ships, submarines, and missile launchers, some of which were labeled mission-critical and could compromise performance and safety. The fraud earned Smith a reported $8,995 for each fan supplied for Bradley fighting vehicles, but the fans actually cost less than $200. Smith could face up to 20 years or more in prison. His sentencing date has not yet been set.
