Researchers from the University of Missouri-Kansas City and the United States have found that between 2005 and 2019, the number of words spoken to another human being fell by nearly 28 percent. The researchers compared data from 22 studies to determine how much words were being recorded, with the average of 16,632 words being recorded in 2005. This drop has led to concern over the psychological effects of reduced human interaction and loss of basic conversational skills. Younger people were found to be more susceptible to this, but only slightly, and those over 25 lost 314 words a day. Despite this, experts believe that small changes could help reverse the trend.
