The UK Labour Party is planning to crack down on pheasant shooting, with plans to explore licensing and impose restrictions on releasing pheasants and partridges. The move is part of a wider effort by the government to regulate the amount of land given over to game shooting in England, which ministers claim covers a significant area. While acknowledging the value of recreational shoots, they argue there are trade-offs with environmental, economic, and animal health and welfare outcomes. The Countryside Alliance's chief executive, Tim Bonner, criticised the government's claim that there were any economic trading-offs, stating that the sport contributes £3.3bn to the economy and provides an economic contribution in some of the most marginal communities in rural Britain. As part of Labour's new land strategy, the government also proposed that half a million acres of England must be covered in solar panels and wind turbines to meet net zero targets.
